The Rotary Club of Matlock

The Rotary Club of Matlock is part of the worldwide “Rotary International” organisation.  We provide service and/or financial assistance to deserving persons, charities and other charitable concerns locally, nationally and internationally.

By joining Matlock Rotary you won’t just be a member of the Matlock Rotary Club – you’ll also be part of a vast international network of 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide. Wherever you are, at home or abroad, one of the 32,000 clubs is nearby, waiting to give you a warm welcome.

The Matlock club has been in existence since 1927.  Over the years it has tried to serve the needs of the local, and wider, community and constantly monitors its format and rules to keep abreast of the modern needs of its membership, both current and potential.

We are a friendly Club with around 50 members both women and men.  We have relaxed meetings and a great atmosphere.  We meet on Mondays, (except bank holidays), in the evening for a meal followed by either a speaker or some Club business.

Like all Rotary Clubs we welcome potential new members. We have an active social programme, which includes Partners evenings, Christmas Party, Summer BBQ’s, Theatre visits, Ten-Pin bowling and other trips. These, with the fellowship and participation in our fund raising projects, prove that raising money and showing “Service above Self” can also be great fun.  We are also twinned with and arrange meetings and exchange visits with the Rotary Club of Silves, in Portugal’s Algarve.

Twice a month, we invite interesting speakers to come to the Club to talk on a wide range of subjects. We hope this expands our awareness, knowledge and understanding by listening to, and questioning these specialist speakers. All members serve on one of the clubs four committees to arrange aspects of the club, such as community and international service, fund raising and club administration.

We raise funds locally via a variety of fund raising events and projects, none of which would be possible without the voluntary assistance of our members. More recent projects have included:

  • Annual Dovedale Dipper Challenge walk with several hundred participants.
  • Fun and Games at the Chatsworth Country fair to raise much needed cash.
  • Charity Golf day.
  • Tissington Triangle cycling event.
  • Managing and emptying our local wishing wells.
  • Public coin and cash collections for worthy causes
  • Many other events and individual sponsorship events.

Of the funds we raised in recent years the following were some of the supported charities

  • Macmillans Cancer Care
  • Ashgate Hospice
  • Aquabox
  • Helens Trust
  • Mountain Rescue
  • MS Trust
  • St. Johns Ambulance
  • Eradication of Polio
  • Rainbow Hospice
  • Fairplay *
  • CAB
  • SSAFA (assisting military personnel affected by conflicts)

We also provided help to local disadvantaged children and regularly send a group of children to a Pantomime in Buxton.

 * A joint project with other Rotary Clubs in the Derbyshire area to purchase as minibus.
